Sociology is the study of how society is organised. It looks at how people are affected by society and how society is affected by people. Students study a range of theoretical approaches including Marxism, Feminism, Functionalism and the New Right. They examine core themes such as socialisation, culture and identity, social differentiation, power and stratification. Students then evaluate these theories and themes in relation to a range of areas within society.
The study of Sociology focuses on contemporary society and fosters the development of critical and reflective thinking with a respect for social diversity. It provides an awareness of the importance of social structure and social action in explaining social issues. The specification encourages students to:
