English as a Second Language

This course supplements students’ studies of GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature, if English is the student’s second language and  continues to develop the skills acquired up to Year 9, particularly

Content:

The course is comprised of a Reading and Writing paper, where a range of non-fiction texts are studied to practise reading for gist and for detail and writing to communicate clearly, accurately and appropriately, using the correct register. There is a Listening paper where a variety of recorded passages are studied to learn to understand a range of English accents and a Speaking test where there is a 2–3 minute warm-up conversation with the examiner (the teacher), followed by a 6–9 minute discussion with the examiner on a given topic.

Assessment: (Extended level)   

60% Reading and Writing examination (2 hours written paper)

20% Listening examination (50 minutes)

20% Speaking examination (10-15 minutes)

Where students have English as a Second Language they are prepared for the IELTS examinations.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work using English as a language of communication. It uses a nine-band scale to identify levels of proficiency and assesses ability in listening, reading, writing and speaking.
